Mentor FAQ

Being a mentor is exceptionally rewarding. It can provide you with  many opportunities to learn from and share with your mentee, gain new insights, develop your leadership skills and discuss experiences that enrich both your perspectives moving forward.

Am I suitable to be an alumni mentor? All members of the Grant Thornton UK Alumni Community can volunteer to become a mentor, but you must have the right attributes. Please check the Alumni Mentor Job Description (PDF)

Who leads the meetings? We encourage mentees on our scheme to take responsibility for setting the agenda. The mentoring relationship is a focus on the mentee and their career, so it’s their responsibility to be clear about their objectives from the start.

What is my role as a Mentor? You will provide support, guidance and practical help to a mentee around the topic of career and professional development.

What if I have not received any invitations to mentor anybody? Please make sure that your mentoring profile is complete and details all of your skills and experience. It may be that your services are very specialist and therefore you will only receive occasional requests to help.

How can I assess if the mentoring relationship will work? Once we have made a match between mentee and mentor, an introductory email is sent so you can arrange your first meeting. The first meeting is an opportunity for you to get a feel for whether or not the relationship is going to work. It’s important to attend feeling prepared and ready for an open discussion.

How do I update my mentoring profile? Simply go to the list of mentors, select “my items only” and click “search”. Your mentoring profile should then be displayed and you can make any amendments by clicking on the three red dots on the right hand side and selecting “edit”.

How do stop being a mentor? To delete your profile simply go to the list of mentors, select “my items only” and click “search”. Your mentoring profile should then be displayed and you can make any amendments by clicking on the three red dots on the right hand side and selecting “delete”. If you are in a current mentoring relationship, please do not delete your profile until it is ended.

Why have no mentees registered their interest? Have you made sure your mentoring profile is up-to-date? It is key to provide mentees with your information, so they can make an educated decision on whether you would be the right mentor. the other thing to check is that you have not hidden your profile in the privacy setting. You can check this by clicking on the top right arrow, next to your profile picture, and selecting “Privacy”. In the basic privacy settings you need to make sure you have not selected “Hide my profile”.
